New York‑Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital is a leading pediatric medical facility where surgical environments must remain fully operational and tightly controlled at all times. Mechanical upgrades in such settings demand precision planning, infection‑control awareness, and flawless execution.

EQUANS MEP served as the Prime Contractor for a critical HVAC upgrade involving the replacement of air handling equipment serving operating room spaces—all while maintaining uninterrupted surgical operations in adjacent and below‑grade spaces.

 


PROJECT SCOPE HIGHLIGHTS

EQUANS MEP’s responsibilities included:

  • Replacement of dual air handling units serving operating rooms
  • Installation of a new clean steam generator
  • Replacement of associated VAV boxes and miscellaneous HVAC equipment
  • Phased execution to avoid disruption to active operating rooms located on the floor below
  • Full coordination with hospital staff, infection control teams, and other trades

PROJECT CHALLENGE

Severe space constraints within the existing mechanical areas required innovative installation strategies. The original air handling units could not be removed intact and were required to be cut into small sections to fit through limited access points and doorways.

Similarly, the new air handlers could not be delivered fully assembled. The units were delivered in “knock‑down” form and built by hand in their final location, requiring careful sequencing, precise assembly, and strict quality control—while maintaining hospital safety protocols and continuous operation of adjacent clinical spaces.


PROJECT OUTCOME

The project was successfully completed without disrupting ongoing surgical procedures, meeting the hospital’s strict performance, safety, and reliability standards. The upgraded HVAC systems now provide improved air quality control, redundancy, and operational reliability for critical operating room environments.
